View 267: Crunchman

A good team mascot makes the games more exciting for the fans, roots on the home team no matter the score, participates in off-ice and in-game promotions and meets with fans both young and old.

Future World

Walt Disney first proposed the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow or EPCOT in a famous episode of Disney’s Wonderful World of Color television show in the late 1960’s. A little over a decade later, EPCOT Center as it was first called opened as a scaled back version from Walt’s original concept.

Epcot introduced the term Edutainment as each pavilion sought to educate as well as entertain. Over the years, the pavilions have evolved more towards entertainment. What has not changed is the futuristic architecture of Future World.

Spaceship Earth is an eighteen story geodesic sphere that takes guests on a time machine-themed experience telling the story of human communications.

While Epcot is not what Walt wanted it to be, it still embodies the spirit of human invention and ingenuity.

View 266: Great Fall in the Woods

The name Taughannock comes from the Algonquian-speaking Lenni Lenape (Delaware) Indians, referring either to chief Taughannock or the word taghkanic (great fall in the woods) [Source Wikipedia]. I like the latter definition of Taughannock as you walk on a trail in the woods along a meandering creek to the great falls at Taughannock Falls State Park near Ithaca, New York.  Which is what I did a couple of weeks ago with a few photographer friends.

I would like to tell you we followed all the signs.

The weather was perfect for a winter stroll on the trail. Right, Andy? Light snow had fallen on the trees and freshened up the forest floor.

Barbara needed a model and asked Debbie to walk ahead with her bright blue coat adding a colorful contrast to the winter landscape.

At the end of the trail, we came upon Taughannock Falls, the Great Fall in the Woods.

The Great Fall was made even greater with the fellowship of people who joined me on what I would consider the perfect winter’s day.

Not pictured but very much there, Monroe, lent his expertise and fun banter to the day.

I came across the term Minimalist Photography this week on Google+.  Photographer Steve Johnson will be releasing a book this Spring covering the topic in depth.  He defines Minimalist Photography as not simply about taking a photograph of less. Minimalism is about getting to the essence of something. By definition, it is a reductive process that starts from a non-minimalist position then, through the stripping away of what is not important, gets to what is important.

As I said, I came upon the term after my visit to Ithaca last weekend. In past visits to the waterfalls, I concentrated on the BIG picture. The grand landscape.  This time I took time to look for small details.  What I call Mini-landscapes.

While I had not been exposed to minimalist photography yet, I was trimming away at the grand landscape. Focusing in on the essence of the scenes found in the snow, ice, rock and dried plants. Winter is Nature’s minimalist season.

My processing of these photos was not in the minimalist way as I enhanced colors, textures and exposures.  I shall be revisiting this kind of photography in the future as I found it challenging which is always a good thing. 🙂
