View 25: Centrifugal Force

Centrifugal Force

Centrifugal force (from Latin centrum “center” and fugere “to flee”) is an apparent force acting outward from the axis of a rotating reference frame. In the case of the little boy above, he is learning how the moving ride is forcing him firmly against the side of the ride vehicle as it spins. This picture was taken at last weekend’s Jamesville Balloonfest where they had many carnival rides, games, gravity games, food and gift vendors.

When I was there, the weather and lighting wasn’t the best. The hot air balloons where inflated but did not launch. The scheduled balloon glow was also cancelled due to the threat of thunder storms a few miles west of the launching grounds. I did manage a few images…

View 24: A River Runs Through It

Seneca River

Over the past ten years, my village of Baldwinsville has undergone a transformation using the natural resource of the Seneca River and the Man-made Erie Canal to bring in more people to the village. New restaurants, an inn, festivals, concerts and fireworks bring in tourists, fishermen, boaters and village locals back into the downtown and river area. This is much different than 100 years ago when the river and canal meant power and transportation for the industries of Baldwinsville but, the results are the same, more opportunities for entrepreneurs to build a business and enjoyment of the river for everyone else.

Wildlife still call the Seneca River home like this Mallard Duck. Fishing is a major draw from bass to record-setting carp. Erie Canal Lock 24 is open for business and is one of the busiest on the Erie Canal system. Many of the boaters stop by the Lock 24 Restaurant to have a meal and listen to entertainers like Dr. Paul on warm evenings from Spring to Fall.

View 23: On Guard!

Male Wood Duck protecting the nesting box.

Male wood duck protecting the nest (from a nearby zoo worker wading around the pond) taken in the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, NY. I used a Nikon SB-600 flash at +3 and was rewarded with being able to see the female in the nesting box.

I finally got a picture of the one of the zoo’s Red Wolves. The viewing area for them is above the wolf’s enclosure which has a lot of trees and brush for them to hide under. The Eastern Screech Owl was out being shown by one of the zoo’s handlers for the bird show. Another first was getting a nice portrait of the Northern River Otter who is usually curled up sleeping on me. This time he was kind enough to pose.

View 22: Sunrise, Sunset

My goal was to capture a sunrise and sunset over the weekend.  Turns out the location I selected for the sunrise really didn’t have a good view so I settled for something taken before sunrise.  With the sunset, I did much better heading to a beach on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario.

Sunrise…

Sunset…

Both of these photographs were taken with the fabulous Nikon 18-200 VR Zoom lens.  I have rarely taken this lens off my camera since I purchased it about a year ago.  The range is perfect for travel photography, walking about your home town and keeps your camera bag small and lite.  I highly recommend it!

For you Canon owners, Sigma sells an 18-200 OS Zoom Lens which has gotten good user reviews.
