Photographing a Car Show

Last weekend I photographed the 12th annual Syracuse Nationals car show.  This year the show had over 7,000 entries from antique automobiles to totally custom creations.  Photographing a show of this size is very challenging and overwhelming.  Being a mostly outdoor show, the weather can play a big factor.  This year there was bright sunshine and temperatures hovering around 90 degrees F (32 Celsius).

Like any subject, I find I like the photographs of cars and other vehicles better if I get down to their level.  When approaching a car I would like to photograph, I walk all the way around it (if possible) looking for distinguishing characteristics. I ask myself what makes this car unique from the thousands of other cars at the show.  It could be the shape of the car (the Plymouth Superbird in the upper right corner with it’s large rear spoiler), special paint color or graphics (the patriotic painting on a hood in the lower left), special place in pop culture (the red Ford Gran Torino replica from the Starsky & Hutch TV show in the lower right) or a part of a car like a hood ornament, wheel or engine (the four smaller photos). The upper left car is one of my favorite kinds of hot rods, a 1940’s Coupe and another good reason to photograph a car at a show.

The bright sunshine I mentioned created dark shadows and I used a Nikon SB-600 Speedlight flash for fill light.  Show cars are very shiny and reflective. Care must be taken by the photographer to not be reflected in the photos.  Of course, sometimes it’s fun to do so. Vendors selling iced bottled water and drinks got a lot of business from me as I made sure I kept plenty of fluids inside of me.  There were reports of heat related illnesses and I did not want to be one of them.

Just Fishin’

Daughter/Daddy moment at Fair Haven State Park near Oswego, New York.

While walking around Fair Haven State Park last weekend, I followed a Dad taking his daughter fishing with him.  They were so cute together as they walked out onto the old pier.  He had his fishing gear and she had a bucket of colored chalk to play with.  They talked as he started to fish and she began coloring the weathered cement. Brightening both their lives.

They reminded me of this Trace Adkins’ song…

Scale Model

Driving down the road one day I spied this garage with some very interesting work going on in its bays.  A roadster hot rod in one and, my favorite, a coupe from the 1940’s.  There’s was even an old antique truck out front waiting its turn to be restored.

I have to hand it to the mechanic who owns this shop.  He keeps it clean and…

he kept it to scale.  1/30th to be exact.  The cars are models while the garage was built of wood, plastic and fiberglass.  This model garage was entered into the model diorama competition at the 2011 Syracuse Nationals car show last weekend.

This is my contribution to Assignment 14: Showing Scale.

View 186: Summer Weekend

Summer weekends are precious when they are preceded by a long winter and wet spring.  You want to fill them with fun, family and warmth.

I started out my weekend by taking in a Cam-Am Box Lacrosse playoff game between the Rochester Greywolves and the Onondaga Red Hawks at the Onondaga Nation Arena.  It was a great game which was tied after the first two periods.  The Greywolves took control scoring 4 goals in the first 5 minutes of the third period to post a 12-8 victory in the first game of a best of three playoff series.

Saturday I toured the annual Syracuse Nationals car show with over 7,000 hot rods, muscle and classic cars at the New York State Fairgrounds.  It was a very hot and crowded day so I went light with my Nikon D700 and 28-300VR lens.  Every color of the rainbow was present in the show cars.  A good place for me to build up photos for Karma’s latest Photo Hunt. 😉

Sunday found me back on the shore of Lake Ontario with a family picnic at New York’s Fair Haven State Park.  My Brother-in-Law brought up his power boat and younger family members took turns water skiing and tubing.  I enjoyed watching them from the boat and photographing  their many mishaps and spills. This is another form of recreation you see on the waters of Lake Ontario.

Beautiful Lake

After hours of fun on the water or on the beaches of Lake Ontario, watching the Sun set over the beautiful lake is a good way to end the day.

I wanted to freeze the water so choose a fast shutter speed of 1/500th of a second and kept the ISO at 200 for best quality. The low angle of the Sun created strong back lighting on the waves. It is slightly underexposed by about a 1/3 stop using the EV compensation button to bring out more color.  That’s an old landscape photographer trick.
