View 290: Baldwinsville Mural Update

Last time I checked up on the 4 Corners Mural Project, there were a few items left to fill in.  I stopped in again last week and found the mural almost complete.  Something I have learned from my years traveling to Walt Disney World is that things change and need to be documented.  I took a few detail photos of the mural this time.

History of the Village of Baldwinsville is colorfully depicted from the old cable cars which  used to run between the village and Syracuse to a canal boat on the Baldwin Canal.  The replica of a New York historical marker in the upper left panel was a clever way of giving credit to Emily and the volunteers who helped her to create the new mural.

For any long time Baldwinsville resident, there is so much on the mural to bring back memories.  Many of the buildings are either no longer here or changed totally over the last 150 years. I really enjoyed seeing references to the old Palace Theater where I saw my first James Bond movie, Corner Pharmacy and Korner Cakery.  Even the mechanical horse every kid begged their parents to ride at the Titcomes store can be found on the mural.

Tomorrow, July 30, 2013, Emily and her crew will be washing down the mural and brushing on a clear isolation coat to help preserve it from weather for years to come.

Here is how the mural looks walking north up Syracuse Street.

I would like to congratulate Emily on the completion of her project.  It is a wonderful gift to the village and all us residents.

Sweet Summertime

Ah, summer…a time to enjoy the outdoors and to get reacquainted with the largest celestial object in our sky, the Sun.  I tried to find the quintessential summer photo(s) over the last few weeks. Here is what I came up with.

Give kids a water hose on a hot day and all kinds of fun breaks out.

Talk about your Dog Days of Summer, even dogs had a tough time finding ways to stay cool.

One of my wife and mine’s favorite things to do each summer is visit the numerous seasonal ice cream stands around central New York.  Last weekend, we drove the Ford Mustang up to Sweet Inspirations Drive-In near Fulton, New York. I enjoyed a strawberry sundae with hard vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and nuts.

Remember my issues with finding a good summer sunset? I think I finally found a couple of good ones.

Ah, and here is what I would define as the perfect ending to a hot summer day, cooling off in the waters of Lake Ontario with friends and family.

So, what do you think of my photos for the Summertime Assignment?

View 289: Ford Mustang 5.0

Back in the mid-1990’s, I owned a 1990 Ford Mustang GT 5.0.  Had a lot of fun with it.  Even raced the GT at ESTA Dragstrip a few times.  Alas, it became a little too expensive to keep running with two daughters becoming teens at the time.  Soon after, Ford redesigned the Mustang and replaced the 5.0 with a smaller more technologically advanced 4.6 liter engine.

In 2011, Ford reintroduced the 5.0 liter in both the GT and Boss 302 editions.  Last weekend, I found one hanging out at the Sweet Inspirations Cruise In near Fulton, New York.

A Sweet Ride: 2013 Ford Mustang GT with a 5.0 liter V8 engine in Candy Red Metallic trim and a 6 speed manual transmission, 18-inch wheels and Borla exhaust with chrome tips.

A Sweet Photo: Seven exposure, -3 to +3 EV, High Dynamic Range (HDR) image taken hand held which is why the ISO is 3200.  After merging the photos in Photomatix Pro Plugin for Aperture 3.x, the resulting image had a lot of digital noise.  I ran it through the Noise Ninja Plugin for Aperture to smooth out the roughness on the car. I elected to pop the colors a bit to go with the Mustang’s exterior color.

Featured Friday

With many people at First Dining, Deck 11 on the Disney Dream cruise ship was prepared for Pirate Night festivities. Crew members had just finished covering the pools to create a large entertainment area for people to watch the show.

Today, I am being honored with an article on The Glass Slipper Blog as a Featured Friday Photographer. Want to thank Kristi Creed for putting the post together.

Chasing Sunsets

The weather this summer has not been conducive for sunsets.  Many rainy evenings over the past month have masked the Sun on the horizon.  Other times, when it looked promising, haze in the atmosphere had the Sun disappearing before it set.

A hot and humid summer day ends with the Sun setting into the haze over the Oswego Harbor as seen from Breitbeck Park in Oswego, New York.

Finally, the rain stopped and the humidity dropped.  Walked out to the end of the Creekwalk in Syracuse, New York to photograph the sunset over Onondaga Lake. Alas, clouds on the western horizon obscured the Sun.

Sometimes the sunset is only the first act to a more colorful second as I found out on the rocky shore of Lake Ontario near Oswego, New York.

There is only a week left before this month’s assignment on Summertime is due.  Maybe I will find a sunset worthy of summer by then.
