Imperial Stormtroopers greeted guests above the entrance to Disney’s Hollywood Studios during Star Wars Weekend.  This stormtrooper was mimicking me taking photos of him. 🙂  Get ready for a few Disney posts!

I am still recovering from the Disney vacation which wore out my Nikon D700 camera as the shutter locked up a couple of hours before returning home. Will be sending it in to Nikon for repairs.  I will dust off the old D70 during its absence.

I will be publishing the Blue Hour assignment recap next week.

View 230: A Salute to American Veterans

Walt Disney is quoted as saying, “Actually, if you could see close in my eyes, the American flag is waving in both of them and up my spine is growing this red, white and blue stripe.”  The Disney parks follow Walt’s quote with patriotic shows such as the American Adventure in Epcot where a few times daily the Spirit of America Fife & Drum Corps pay tribute to America, her veterans and those who lost their lives in defending her.

Over in the Magic Kingdom, the daily Flag Retreat ceremony honors a veteran in attendance for his service and to all veterans.

Enjoy your Memorial Day but do not forget those who lost thier lives so we may enjoy our freedoms today.

Friday Links

Been awhile since I have shared some links with you and, since I am on vacation this week, thought it would be a good filler until I get back.

Gear: Prime lenses can be confusing to photographers if they started out with kit zoom lenses.  Kent Weakley shows us 5 Ways to Maximize using a Prime Lens.

Photography: You knew I could not resist tying in my vacation with a couple of these links.  I will be attending Star Wars Weekend today and could not pass up this link: A Jedi Knights Guide to Photography.  Read it or read not, it is well written and full of good advice.

Editing: The hardest thing for us photographers to do is to delete a photo. Even if we can save one, the time involved may not be worth it.  I happen to agree with Lara White when she says, Keep the Best, Delete the Rest, and watch your photography improve.

Inspiration: Forced Perspective is a staple of Disney Imagineers to create illusions of size and here are 88 Brilliant Examples of Forced Perspective Photography for you to enjoy.  You know this will be an assignment someday, right? 😉

eBook Review: I will be using this ebook to capture some of the author’s 10 Must Take Photos in the Magic Kingdom this weekend.  The photo below is one of them.

Click, read, learn, try and share everyone!  See you next week!

Blue Super Moon

While I did not have much luck with the Super Moon earlier this month, I decided to create a blue hour version by using a long exposure to build up the sky’s blue color.

A few days before the Super Moon, I accompanied members of the Syracuse Photographers Association Meetup Group in a Spring shoot around Liverpool, New York. It was another cloudy evening and the sunset was non-existent.  I decided to wait for Blue Hour and took these photos of a couple of the churches in town.

View 230: In Motion Photography

I curate a Daily Photography Theme on Google+ called #InMotionThursday where people share their motion photography under the same hashtag (#).  Here are three types of in motion photos I look for from the Google+ photographers:

Zooming – You need a zoom lens to create this effect and the longer the zoom the better. The Nikon 28-300mm VR Zoom lens I use works great. It was a bright sunny day for this photo of a bright orange Pontiac GTO at ESTA Safety Park Dragstrip so I had to close down the aperture to f/22 to get a relatively slow 1/30th of a second shutter speed.  I set my camera in burst mode and started with the lens at its 300mm focal length.  While pressing down the shutter button, I zoomed the lens the entire range back to 28mm.  This was one of the middle photos of the set.

Blurring – You create a blur by using a long exposure relative to the motion of the subject(s) being photographed.  Racing trucks create blurring at a shutter speed of 1/20th of a second when they take off as the starting lights flash green.

Nikon D700/28-300VR, 1/20s, f/22, ISO 200, EV +0.3, 28mm focal length.

Panning – You pan the camera smoothly to track the subject with a slow shutter speed while taking the photo.  The idea is to keep the subject in sharp focus while the background turns into streaks of motion.

Nikon D700/28-300VR, 1/125s, f/8, ISO 200, EV +0.3, 135mm focal length.

While happy accidents happen to everyone, the best motion photographs are made intentionally by the photographer.
