Photography Show for Hospice of CNY V

I would like to invite one and all to this year’s Hospice of CNY Fine Art Photography Show. This is the fifth year I was asked to produce this show and, I think, it is the best one yet.

If you live around Syracuse, the FREE Artist Reception will be held on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm at the offices of Hospice of CNY (see banner below for the address. It is not far from the 7th North Street exits of Route 81). Refreshments and snacks (including cookies!) will be provided free of charge. This is a great opportunity to see the works of some of the finest local photographers in our area.

Here is a preview of what you will see.

This year I am accompanied by nine Upstate New York Photographers which created an excellent selection of fifty photographs featuring travel locations both near and far.

Hope to see you there!

NOTE: If you can not make the reception and would like to see the show, you may visit Hospice of CNY between the hours of 9am and 4pm, Monday thru Friday until the close of the show on January 5, 2016.

View 373: Taughannock Falls State Park Autumn Walk

I heard there was still good autumn color in the trees around Ithaca, New York. Not that I need one, it gave me an excuse to visit my favorite state park, Taughannock Falls State Park.

I have shared many images over the years of the big waterfall, this time I want to take you with me as I walk the Rim Trails in the park. The Upper Gorge is a beautiful and deep gorge cut by the creek before the big waterfall. With an overcast sky, I used a bracketed set of photos to create the HDR image using Photomatix Pro.

At the start (or end depending which way you are walking) of both the North and South Rim Trails, are the much smaller Lower Taughannock Falls. It has a charm all its own especially with the colors of autumn behind them.

You knew I had to include one of the big waterfall, right?

The North Rim Trail has my very favorite view of Taughannock Falls with the trees adding natural framing. The flow of water over the cliff is about normal for late October.

Taughannock Falls State Park never disappoints.

View 372: Run, Skate & Kick

You might say I was a little busy last week. It all started on Sunday, October 11, as I took a team of photographers to cover the 2015 edition of the LaFayette Apple Run.

Three days later it was time for the annual Syracuse Crunch Welcome to Town event at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York. This event gives fans of the Crunch time to meet, get autographs from and take pictures with the team. Season ticket holders can pick up their tickets with players providing the service.

The next night, I headed to Victor, New York to watch my nephew play in his Senior Night Soccer game. I photographed the opening ceremonies and other things to document the evening for him and his family.

I capped off the week at the 22nd Home Opener for the Syracuse Crunch at the War Memorial Arena in Syracuse, New York.

During the opening ceremonies, each Crunch player escorted a nurse or nurses from Update University Hospital in honor of all they do for the community in caring for their patients. The ceremonial puck drop was performed by ESPY Award winner and former NFL player Devon Still who brought national awareness to pediatric cancer which his daughter, Leah, is fighting. The game featured some great hockey with the winning goal being scored by new comer to the Crunch, Jeff Tambellini (7), seen in the lower right of the collage above.

Whew! I am tired. I have a few days to rest up before the next Crunch game later this week. I want to thank Rod Best and Eric Payne for their assistance in covering a few of these events.

Back in August, I shared a very long exposure of Upper Pinnacle Falls in Fillmore Glen State Park near Moravia, New York. Today, I share a High Dynamic Range image as Autumn descended on the park.  The colors last weekend were predominantly golden yellows and oranges. With Beech trees changing first along the Gorge Trail in the park, yellows mixed in with unchanged greens of maples and oaks.

I was in the park for the Fall Colors at Fillmore Glen Photo Tour and enjoyed teaching and talking photography with the six participants. It was a beautiful day and a lot of great images were created by the group. Below, I photographed one student at Upper Pinnacle Falls working his magic.

This was a location I suggested and he was pleased with the photos he got there. With wet and cold weather coming this week, it might mean an early end to this year’s autumn photography season in upstate New York.

View 370: 1000 Islands Weekend

Spent the weekend in the 1000 Islands along the St. Lawrence River in northern New York. First stop was the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, New York.

The museum has three hundred unique and beautifully-preserved boats focusing on the heritage of the Adirondacks and the St. Lawrence River.

After spending a couple of hours enjoying, learning and photographing the boats, I checked in at the 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel in Clayton, New York.

The Harbor Hotel is a beautiful resort right on the St. Lawrence River. In fact, the room overlooked the river and it was fun seeing the large cargo ships going up and down the Seaway.

After spending the night in Clayton, I drove east up Route 12 to Alexandria Bay and took a launch over to Boldt Castle on Heart Island.

A lot has changed at Boldt Castle since my last visit back in 2007. A lot more rooms have been renovated and the Alster Tower is now open though still being worked on.

October is a beautiful month. Now, I am just waiting for more autumn colors to show up.
