This week I got all caught up with the event photo processing from the last three weekends.  To celebrate, I grabbed this fun app from MacPhunn called FX Photo Studio (Only $9.99 from the Mac App Store).  This app can import directly from iPhoto, Aperture and Lightroom libraries eliminating the need to export the photos first.

I had a lot of fun going through the 172 different special effect (FX) filters.  To demonstrate, I used this photo of Cinderella Castle I took a few Walt Disney World trips back and applied a some FX Photo Studio filters.

Fun, eh? 🙂  You can use more than one at a time making numerous special effects which you can then save as Presets to be recalled in the future.  Oh, don’t have an Apple computer?  Do you have an iPhone, iTouch or iPad/2?  FX Photo Studio is also available for your iOS device for $1.99/$2.99.

River Cruise

One of the events I attended during the 2011 C. W. Baker Alumni Weekend was a Lunch Cruise by the Mid-Lakes Navigation Company. A group of twenty-five alumni and their families convened at Dutchman’s Landing near Syracuse, New York to board our vessel, the Emita II, for a two hour cruise on the Seneca River.

After leaving dock and getting our safety instructions from the captain, a lunch buffet was served in the boat’s lower deck.  The buffet featured Dinosaur Bar-B-Que pork and chicken in the restaurant’s famous sauces, rolls, salt potatoes in butter, salad and corn bread.  Non-alcoholic drinks were included with the buffet with a full bar in the galley for those who wanted something a bit more spirited.  The food was tasty and plentiful.

The highlight of the cruise (besides the great food) was a trip through Lock 24 in Baldwinsville, New York.  This is the same lock I showed drained back in 2009 for maintenance.  As you can see it is now fully operational. The large metal doors where swung open for the Emita II to enter.

The water was raised in the lock using no pumps but only the laws of physics.  Anyone know which ones?  After the water became level with the western end of the lock, the lock master opened the doors and the Emita II moved out of the lock and up river.

We did not go far as the Emita II swung around to give us a view of Paper Mill Island before returning back to Lock 24 to cycle back down to the eastern Seneca River’s level for our return trip back to the dock at Dutchman’s Landing.

In all my years of living in central New York, I have never been on this part of the Seneca River until this cruise.  I guess I need to get out more, eh? 🙂

View 189: Reunion Weekend

Last weekend was my high school’s alumni event and I was tagged as the official photographer by the C. W. Baker Alumni Association.  This event pushed my photographic skills from concert, people, fireworks to documentary photography.

To create a fun reunion covering class years over the last 60 years, get the school's Pep band to open the weekend, get quality entertainment on an outdoor stage, good food on a river boat cruise and mix in classmates reliving and creating memories.

All photos taken with a Nikon D700 camera and 24-85mm lens.

This was my first time attending the annual alumni weekend in Baldwinsville, New York.  I got to meet and photograph members from the 1960’s right up to this year’s graduating class.  Talked to people who attended one room schoolhouses, the old academy (which was my elementary school) and when the current high school housed the junior high classes until the junior high was built.  During a Seneca River lunch cruise, we went through Baldwinsville’s Lock 24. As the captain explained how no pumps were used in raising the water level, it got us all to talking about the physics of the lock and the science teachers we all had during high school. Many such discussions over the weekend would spur old memories as we caught up we each others lives.

Paper Mill Island was the site of the evening events.  The first concert night was headlined by Bon Jersey, a Bon Jovi tribute band, featuring lead singer Joe Ventura.  The second night was a combined event with the Village of Baldwinsville and had a VIP area for the returning alumni. The area gave us all time to reconnect with old friends and create new memories as we reminisced about the good times passed.
