View 106: Where the Buffalo Roam

Visited the Theodore Roosevelt National Park today in search of wildlife.  As you can see, I was fortunate enough to come across this American Bison (Bison bison) more commonly called Buffalo.  This animal was a member of a herd of seventeen slowly moving across a Badlands snow covered meadow.  Using their large heads to snowplow the snow out of the way to uncover the tender grass.

The Badlands of western North Dakota made for a beautiful backdrop as I watched and photographed these large bovine creatures for over two hours.   At one time, four of them came up on the road in front of the car I was driving and looked at me.  I felt like I was being challenged but they soon wandered off and let me go on my way.

Internet access via my iPhone has been almost non-existent here in western North Dakota so I haven’t been able to Twitter or upload to this blog as I had hoped.  I leave in the morning for Minneapolis where I’ll catch a plane home on Saturday.  Look for more photos of my day with the buffalo next week.

Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2010 and the start of the second decade of the 21st Century!

I still am looking for those flying cars the Jetson’s had.  Maybe next decade?

Though I am currently somewhere between Syracuse, NY and Chicago, IL when this posts, I wanted to start out 2010 with some inspirational links to get your photographic juices going.  Want you all ready for a new assignment in a couple of weeks. 🙂

I have used Twitter to send some of these links out so you should always keep your eye on the Twitter feed on the left hand side of this blog or click the link to my Twitter page and follow along.  I like to re-tweet out links out I find of value to us, photographers.

40 Below

My daughter modeling her new winter coat which is rated to keep her warm down to 40 below zero.

If you remember, last year my daughter got a new coat for Christmas.  So, why,  you ask, does she need another new coat this year and one which should keep her warm down to 40 below zero?  The answer is she has accepted her first professional job in the northern plains state of North Dakota.  Wind chills in winter often are in the 20 to 30 below zero (Fahrenheit) range where she will be living.

This brings me to the teasers from the Christmas day blog post.  I will be helping her move via rental truck.  We leave early on New Year’s Day for the scheduled three day drive with stops in Chicago and Minneapolis along the way.  I’ll be twitting along the way and you can follow our progress here (see the Follow Me on Twitter in the left sidebar) or, if you’d like, you can follow me on Twitter directly by clicking on the link.

I will be using the WordPress iPhone App to update this blog a few times.  Don’t worry, I am bringing my camera.  I’ve been reading up on Winter Photography and how to handle extreme cold conditions.  I’ll be reporting how I do and hope to share with you some unique photos from the upper plains of the United States.

Do you have any cold weather photography tips or ways to stay warm in very cold weather?  I could really use them!  Leave me a comment!

View 105: Bacon and Tradition

Christmas Day brings not only the enjoyment of giving and receiving gifts in my home but also one of the best meals of the year.  For years, my parents have shared Christmas morning with us.  After opening our gifts and presents from Santa, the Christmas morning breakfast is prepared.  My parents, both in their 80’s, give us the gift of their skill in making Bacon (my Dad) and Home Fries (my Mom).  Here they are making Christmas morning special.

This is one tradition I hope continues for many more years to come.

A Christmas Gift

As it’s been a little crazy since I got back from vacation, I haven’t been out doing any photography.  Been planning another trip which I’ll tell you all about next week.  As my gift to all of you, I am showing you what Niagara Falls looks like in mid-December.  Yes, the glittering sparkles off the railings and light is ice.  Coated by the constant mist from nearby Horseshoe Falls in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.

This photo was taken in December of 2007 during the Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights in Ontario, Canada, a couple months before I started this blog.  It was bitterly cold that night, slippery as all get out and my tripod kept sliding around until I kicked out a place in ice to put the legs into.  It was also my first try at cold weather photography.  Something I will be doing soon (again, more on that later).

It’s been a tough year for my family.  We’ve lost loved ones to cancer and are missing them dearly this holiday season.  However, life goes on as will this blog into it’s third year.  Thank you all who come by frequently and welcome to any new guests who are stopping by.  Come again so, in time, I may call you a friend.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Scott Thomas
