Seasons

Beaver Lake Nature Center Spring and Fall Scenes.

I photographed a couple of the landscapes at different times of the year.  The first above was at the Beaver Lake Nature Center near Baldwinsville, New York.  The upper photo was taken in the Spring on a cloudy day which accented the green leaves of the trees along the lake shore.  The bottom photo was taken a couple of weeks ago as the Sun was setting bathing the scene in golden light.  The leaves had changed from green to yellows, reds and browns.  The migrating geese flying in the background tell you it is fall migration time.

The second location was at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park South Unit Visitor Center in Medora, North Dakota.  These photos show an even greater difference in seasons from the cold and snow of early January compared to the colors of September. In both photos I used the tree for foreground interest against the high butte in the background. The stark difference shows how tough life can be over the course of a few months.

Not only were these photos taken at different times of the year but were taken with different cameras.  The early year photos done with the Nikon D70 and Nikon 18-200VR lens while, the ones taken in the Fall, the Nikon D700 and Nikon 28-300VR lens was used. What a difference a few months make. Hmmm?

Published!

While I have had many photos published in my hometown’s local paper, this month marks the first time I have had one of my photos in a regional publication.  The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation publishes a bi-monthly magazine called The Conservationist which has a circulation of about 90,000. I was contacted by them about a photo I took a couple of years ago when I visited Lake George, New York and explored Prospect Mountain. The article is a personal account of past visits to Prospect Mountain, especially in the autumn to see the beautiful fall colors.

For those who may be interested, check out my catalog at IthacaStock.com which have very reasonable rates for all your stock photography needs.

Below is one of two photos of mine chosen to accompany the article.

The photo was taken with a Nikon D70 and 18-200VR lens.  One does not need expensive equipment to create photos publishers will need and use.

View 147: On the Starting Line

For the second year running, I covered the Apple Run events at the LaFayette Apple Festival in LaFayette, New York.  The three races consist of a 1 Mile Fun Run for families and a 5K and 15K road races.  This year there were 359 participants who gathered on a very frosty morning with temperatures hovering just above the freezing mark.  The sky was blue and clear with many runners saying it was a perfect day for a run.  As the Sun cleared the valley walls, the temperature slowly warmed up and bathed the race courses in perfect light for my task of photographing the races.

Another photographer was covering the start and in race photos for the 15K while I covered the 5K.  The new Nikon 28-300VR FX lens has a vibration reduction (VR) setting for photographing from a moving vehicle.  The lens did very well from a moving automobile going about 20 mph (32 kph) even at the maximum focal length of 300mm.

When covering an event like the Apple Run, I try to look for stories going on.  In the photo below, the two young girls where waiting for the first women runner to finish the 15K Road Race (you can see her in the background on the right as she came into view).  The girls started cheering and jumping to urge her to the finish line.

View 146: Mushrooms and Ferns

Went out looking for autumn color last week.  My area is still far from peak.  Some trees showed color here and there.  Overall, I did not get much from the Beaver Lake Nature Center near Baldwinsville, New York.  When out looking for landscapes do not overlook micro landscapes like these mushrooms and ferns I noticed on a fallen log next to where I was photographing.  As you can see by the green ferns, at the time I took this, autumn had a ways to go.  However, we did have a wide spread frost over the weekend which should spur autumn along.
