Syracuse Ice Castle

The blog post I had planned got lost in a slew of problems at work this week.  In its replacement, here is the ice castle in Clinton Square created by Joe Borasky for Syracuse, New York’s Winterfest celebration last month.

The weather has long since melted this castle as temperatures have fluctuated from high’s in the 50’s F to low’s below 10 F.  March is a month of extremes in upstate New York.

Will return next week with an exciting Photography blog for you!

Laker

__________________________

The Laker Canadian Leader before going under the 1000 Island Bridge on the St. Lawrence River near Clayton, New York. This ship is similar to the famous SS Edmund Fitzgerald that sank on Lake Superior on November 10, 1975. The mishap which is chronicled in Gordon Lightfoot’s hit song, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, helped make the incident the most famous disaster in the history of Great Lakes shipping.

I rented a Tokina 12-24mm f/4 wide angle lens for a weekend trip to the 1000 Islands in New York state back in 2007.  This was the first time I walked to the top of the 1000 Islands bridge. Remember the last time?

To Kathy of Lake Superior Spirit. 🙂

Photo Scavenger Hunt

Karma on her When I Feel Like It Blog thought a Photo Scavenger Hunt would be fun to do and opened it up to her readers.  I jumped right in.  As I looked over the list, I knew I would need to have a camera with me all the time if I was going to complete the list.  Then it dawned on me I had one right in my pocket.  I used my iPhone for all of the photos in this post with additional processing in Aperture 3 or Picnik.com.

There is still time for you to join on on the fun as Karma has extended the deadline until March 6th to get your scavenger hunt photos posted.

eyes – Did you know the iPhone 4 has a flash?  I didn’t until I was faced with trying to get this photo.  I was determined to use my cat’s eyes for this one.  Gus, my cat, was not the most cooperative and his black face tended to hide his eyes. I noticed the Flash symbol on the screen for the first time and bingo!

a post box – when walking around my town getting photos for the scavenger hunt, I came across this US Postal Service mailbox which is found on one of the busiest corners in the county. Noticed what the HDR setting on the iPhone did to the moving white car.

a bridge – over the New York State Barge Canal at Lock 24.

a big round clock face – I have featured this clock before but you could not tell how big it really is.

a park bench – a beautiful day but an empty bench. Maybe all that snow has something to do with the lack of park visitors.

something heartshaped – one of the people in my office brought in bags of the little candy hearts for Valentine’s Day.  I found this great message on one of them.

my shoes – unlike Karma, I do not own a bevy of shoes.  In fact, I usually wear my shoes until they are worn out.  For instance, my work shoes are only two years old with lots of  good tread left.

a newspaper headline – I almost used this for the heart photo but it wasn’t really heartshaped.  It is a headline from my hometown’s newspaper and, as a bonus, the hockey photo on the left is one of mine. 🙂

something red – Code Red is the cherry flavored version of Mountain Dew.  These are cans sitting in a warehouse waiting to be filled with something you do not want to give your young children.

something with stripes – bar codes are stripes, right?  In case that got overruled, I found a case of soda which also had stripes.

a big lorry (truck) – walking into work yesterday morning, it was 1.) sunny out and 2.) a good time to photograph one of the Sugar trucks.  See those two story tall white tanks behind the truck?  Those are filled with sucrose which are mixed in with the non-diet soda products my company produces.

a musical instrument – this one proved to be the toughest to get.  I have lots of music in my home but no musical instruments. I was running out of time and getting desperate. A walk around a mall during lunch saved me from the embarrassment of not completing the scavenger hunt with a shop full of guitars!

View 166: Winter Flowers

Flowers blooming in the middle of a New York winter in a SUNY-ESF greenhouse in Syracuse.

Flowers blooming in the middle of winter in a SUNY-ESF greenhouse on top of Illick Hall in Syracuse, New York. Nikon D700/50mm, 1/60s, f/8, ISO 560, EV +0.3.

I know I have been complaining about all the snow upstate New York has gotten this winter.  Thankfully, I got a taste of exotic places over the weekend when I attended the Syracuse Photographers Association meetup at my college alma mater, the State University of New York College of Environmental Science & Forestry (SUNY-ESF). ESF has greenhouses on the top of Illick Hall which has species of trees, flowers and other flora from all over the world.  Walking into each greenhouse was a treat for my nose.  The warmth and humidity a delight to my dry skin from the long cold winter.

While I am not big into photographing flowers, the greenhouses had some plants with attitude. I have no idea what any of these are called so, please, do not ask. These were all taken using the Nifty-Fifty, Nikon 50mm f/1.8D lens, and then cropped square for composition.

There was a whole room full of cactus.  One of the photographers quipped it was the “don’t bend over room”.

Nikon D700/50mm, 1/125s, f/5.6, ISO 200, EV +0.3

I swear some of the plants looked carnivorous and ready to grab an unsuspecting passerby.

Nikon D700/50mm, 1/60s, f/8, ISO 360, EV +0.3

I do not want you to think I ignored the flowering plants so here is a nice red one.

Nikon D700/50mm, 1/60s, f/8, ISO 280, EV +0.3

I did a lot of experimenting during my time at the ESF Greenhouses which I will be sharing with you in the very near future.

White Balance Oops

A year ago I wrote a blog about Zeroing Out before using your camera each day or shoot.  I have been doing much better since I published the post.  Lately, I have been trying to get better photos by using custom white balance.  Thus, I have run into a new issue to remember as you can tell by the two photos below.

White balance comparison.

While the custom white balance worked well in the dining room which had incandescent lighting. When I took the photo on the left, I got this blue shifted photo.  This table was near the entrance with light from the hallway spilling in which used tungsten lighting. I happened to think I better check the LCD at the time and switched to auto white balance.  It’s not perfect either but much closer to the real colors.  I can further adjust the photo in post-processing and it will take much less time, too.

I will continue to work with white balance adjustments as I find my photography is much improved when I use it correctly.  Accordingly, I will be much more aware of changing light as I do so.

Another great tool to use for setting custom white balance is an Expodisc.
