Fireworks Perspective

Back in October I showed you this photo of the HallowWishes fireworks show with perimeter bursts from inside the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.

I used a wide angle lens here so the fireworks do not look as close as they do when you are standing there.  In fact, the fireworks look like they are on top of you.

Last week, I photographed Holiday Wishes which also features perimeter bursts.  This time I photographed the show from across the Seven Seas Lagoon at the Ticket and Transportation Center (TTC).  I and a couple of other photographers set up our tripods near the Ferryboat dock.  I had studied the show from youTube videos so I knew the first perimeter bursts would happen a minute into the show and after eleven minutes.

When the show started, the music was put on the speakers in the area. I did not expect that and was pleasantly surprised. Here is what the perimeter bursts look like from this location.

The bursts which look so close when inside the park are not very close at all.  Disney is a master of what is called forced perspective.  They use it in the architecture of the parks and, as you can see, in their firework shows, too.

View 206: Reflection of a Dream Castle

Quick post today as I go out to enjoy my last full day at Walt Disney World.  I took this photo of Cinderella Castle in the Magic Kingdom from the Ticket and Transportation Center near the Ferryboat dock.  The Dream lights on the castle make it look like it is made out of ice.

Photographing Christmas Lights Redo

Note from Scott: I am republishing this post from late November, 2010.  I know information gets buried in blogs and wanted to bring this back up to the top for you all.

Right about now I am still out doing some Black Friday shopping.  Thought this would be a good time to review how to photograph all the Christmas Light displays from your neighbors to large community celebrations.  You know me, what better place to demonstrate photographing light displays than Walt Disney World.

Notice the Exif data for the above photo.  I was shooting in manual mode to keep the ISO at 200 wiht an aperture of f/4.  I experimented with different shutter speeds and the amount of power on the Nikon SB-600 speedlight.  I settled on a 1/4 second exposure with the flash set to its lowest power setting of -3.  Using the SB-600 in Rear-Sync mode allowed enough time for the camera’s sensor to gather in the colorful lights with the flash filling in the details of the sidewalk and bicycles right at the end of the exposure.  Otherwise, you would only see the bright lights.

Here are some links for more tips on how to get colorful Christmas lights in your holiday photographs:

Characters in Flight

Characters in Flight balloon ride at Downtown Disney, Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida.

The Characters in Flight tethered balloon ride at Downtown Disney in Walt Disney World, Orlando, Florida takes guests 300 feet (92m) in the air. The red and yellow balloon is 72 feet in diameter (22m) and is adorned with Disney characters who fly like Mary Poppins, Dumbo the flying elephant and Peter Pan.  I took a ride this week and got these aerial photos of the surrounding area. Rides cost $18 for adults and $12 for kids ages 3-9.

I waited until just after sunset for the ride to get a good balance of the lights and the sky.
