View 394: New York State Chinese Lantern Festival

2018 NYS Chinese Lantern Festival Entrance

New York State Chinese Lantern Festival entrance at the NYS Fairgrounds near Syracuse, New York on Friday, June 22, 2018. Nikon D750/16-35VR, 1/60s, f/4, ISO 900, EV 0, 16mm Focal Length.

The New York State Chinese Lantern Festival returned to the NYS Fairgrounds this year. The festival ran for five weeks from May thru June this year and was set up in the area New York State Parks occupy during the State Fair. Last year it was in a larger and more open area. Construction near that location this year forced the move.

It did not hamper the beauty of the lighted festival though it did prove more challenging to photograph it. The displays are large, colorful and best photographed after the Sun sets. I used a Nikon D750 and Nikon 16-35mm f/4 VR lens and used a tripod for the long exposures needed.

Arches of the New York State Chinese Lantern Festival

Arches of the New York State Chinese Lantern Festival.

The festival had three distinctly different arches to walk through. The one on the bottom of the collage above featured the Chinese Zodiac. I found out I was born in the Year of the Pig. I know one relative who will get a bang out of that. In fact, I was born in the year of the Earth Pig which means I am communicative, popular among my friends and with a strong sense of timekeeping. Hmmm…well two out of three ain’t bad.

New York State Chinese Lantern Festival Dragon

I found the large and very long dragon lantern to be in a hard location to photograph with lampposts and such surrounding it. Still, it is impressive and the longest one of the show. Though not the biggest.

The biggest goes to the huge Blue Whale lantern photographed appropriately enough during Blue Hour.

The evening was cloudy and created an excellent cover for the colorful displays like the Palace Lantern display in front of the Horticulture Building.

I had some fun waiting for people to stand still long enough in front of the Peacock lantern. This young couple was worth the wait.

Okay, I know I complained about the location of the dragon earlier. Ii did have one redeeming quality as I could line up the Sun with its mouth for a fitting way to end this post.

View 393: Father’s Day Tribute

Fathers Day Tribute

Four generations of my family.
Nikon D750/24-102VR, 1/60s, f/5.6, ISO 400, EV +0.3, 24mm Focal Length, Flash.

It is not often I get in front of a camera but this was a very special occasion. Taken about a  year ago. That is me on the left. The handsome gentleman in the middle is my Father. The young woman on the right is my youngest daughter. The newest member of my family sitting on the thigh of my Father is my grandson and his great grandson. My grandson was four months old at the time.

While my grandson will never remember meeting his Great Grandfather, my Dad never forgot meeting his great grandson for the rest of his life. He passed away last September about three months after this photo was taken. He was 93 years old, a World War II Veteran and the best Man I have ever known. Miss you, Dad!

I want to thank my daughter and son-in-law for traveling with a four month old to allow for this photo and to meet other members of the family. Love you all!

Ford Mustangs

Ford Mustangs lined up to enter the All Ford Cruise In and Swap Meet at Longbranch Park near Liverpool, New York on Sunday, June 10, 2018. Nikon D750/24-120VR, 1/125s, f/16, ISO 640, EV 0, 66mm Focal Length, Cropped.

A couple of weekends ago, I helped out the Syracuse Shelby Mustang Club by photographing their annual All Ford Cruise In and Swap Meet. As a member of the club and proud owner of a Mustang myself, I was in my element as hundreds of Ford automobiles dating back to 1917 cruised past my lens. Get ready for a very image heavy post as I took over 400 photos during the all day event.

Ford Classics

Remember the girl in the Ford Thunderbird from the movie American Graffiti? We found out later the actress was Suzanne Somers. Yet, I remember the car more than her.

While the truck below is a classic, the paint is not a factory color for the year and model. Sure makes for a real eye catcher but I am biased when it comes to this color. 🙂

When this beauty of a 1955 Ford Ranch Wagon towing a 1964 Airstream Bambi II travel trailer rolled in, it took me back to my childhood when my family cruised around in a 1967 Ford Country Squire station wagon. The cylinder outside the passenger window of the Ranch Wagon is an “air conditioner”.

Ford Trucks

There were some cool trucks of all sizes starting with this one.

Ford is bringing back the Bronco in 2020. I doubt it will be as big as this one. Sorry, dog was supplied by the Bronco’s owner and was not a Ford option.

I would be remiss if I did not include Ford’s latest Sport Truck series, the Raptor.

Ford Mustangs

Finishing up with my favorite Ford vehicle, the Mustang!

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the movie, Bullitt. While it was not the greatest movie ever made, it does contain what I consider the best car chase scene featuring a 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback (click the link to watch). Over the years Ford has brought out  special Bullitt versions of the Mustang including this year. Since the 2019 Bullitt Mustang has not even been produced yet. Here is one from the last model year of the Bullitt, 2008.

Here is a 1968 Mustang Convertible representing the first generation of Ford’s iconic sports car which lasted from 1964 1/2 to 1973.

Most Mustang people like to ignore the second generation and go right for the third generation affectionately known as the Fox Body Mustang.

In 1994, Ford introduced the fourth generation of Mustang code named “SN-95”. It featured a more modern look with some throwback queues going back to the first generation. The Pony emblem returned front and center to the grille.

The S197 Mustang platform introduced in 2005 ushered in a fifth generation retro-Mustang looking very much like the original 1960’s cars. The last year of this generation was topped off by the powerful 2014 Shelby GT500 Mustang.

The sixth generation of the Ford Mustang came out in 2015 and was a bit controversial. The new S550 platform had a 4-cylinder engine model for the first time since the early 1990’s. The Ecoboost Mustang, while having impressive fuel mileage for an American sports car, came from the factory with 310HP and 320 ft-lbs of torque from the 2.3 Liter Turbocharged power plant. The new Mustang had a 21st century look and technology with the Premium versions having an 8-inch console screen and infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. I liked it so much, I bought one for myself.

See, told you I liked that color.

View 391: Return of the Oswego Sunset

Oswego Harbor Sunset

Sunset taken from Fort Ontario Park of the Oswego Harbor in Oswego, New York on Saturday, June 9, 2018. Nikon D750/16-35VR, f/16, ISO 100, EV 0, 16mm Focal Length, Tripod, HDR Image.

It’s Summertime in Upstate New York and the Sun has returned to Lake Ontario. After having a meal at Rudy’s Lakeside Drive-in near Oswego, New York, I drove over to the Fort Ontario Park which has an overlook of the Oswego Harbor. I had had a long day of shooting a nearly four hour baseball game earlier. The joy of photographing a beautiful sunset on a warm evening was just the thing my spirit needed to unwind.

The first photo shows the Sun about to disappear over the horizon. This next one was taken five minutes after it had set.

Never stop photographing a sunset until well after the Sun has disappeared. Especially if there are clouds in the sky with a clear horizon as the Sun can light the clouds up.

For those of you who may be interested, here is the location I was photographing from (yellow star on the map).

This is a welcome back for me. A lot has happened over the last 18 months since my last blog post. My heart was not in it. Lately, I found I have missed it and will be posting weekly (for now) as I did when I first started this blog back in 2008.

For those interested, both of the sunset images were created from five photos taken 1-Stop apart and merged into one image via Aurora 2018 HDR software by Skylum. I finished off the processing in Adobe’s Lightroom Classic.

Best of Views Infinitum 2016

This year, I decided to let others pick my best ten (10) photographs of 2016. Specifically, the people who follow me and/or view my photos on my flickr account based on the number of Favorites or Favs each got.  I will preface this first by noting I did not upload a lot to flickr this year nor have I posted as regularly on this blog. Still, I think I got a very good set of photographs.

10.) Contemporary Christmas (17 Favs). As I mostly upload photos from my Disney trips to flickr, it is not surprising most of the photos are from Walt Disney World as I visited three times in 2016. Starting from the latest trip in December of 2016. On the last evening, my family and I visited the resorts along the monorail line to view each one’s Christmas decorations. At the Contemporary Resort, I found this composition of the large tree outside in front of the resort.

Nikon D750/24-120VR, 1/10s, f/8, ISO 6400, EV 0, 24mm Focal Length.

9.) Epcot Monorail (17 Favs). In the Spring, Epcot turns into a colorful landscape of flowers during the annual Flower and Garden Festival. One of the features are the floating flower beds in the ponds the monorails travel over upon transversing the park.

Nikon D750/16-35VR, 1/250s, f/16, ISO 160, EV 0, 35mm Focal Length.

8.) All-Star Goal (18 Favs). The American Hockey League’s All-Star Game for 2016 was played in Syracuse, New York and hosted by the Syracuse Crunch whom I photograph for. I bided and won the contract to photograph the event which featured fan events, AHL Hockey Hall of Fame ceremonies, Skills Competition and the game itself. During the game, I photographed from one of the team’s benches. What an experience to meet all the young talented players and to interact with them. Many have already moved on to the National Hockey League including the goal scorer pictured below.

Nikon D750/80-400VR, 1/1000s, f/5, ISO 5600, EV +1.0, 122mm Focal Length.

7.) Summer Flower (19 Favs). Every three years, the sunflower fields surrounding the The Inn Between restaurant near Camillus, New York bloom. I visited the flowers towards the end of their showing. While many flowers were bent over, I found this one standing tall.

6.) On Top of Bald Mountain (12 Favs). In mid-October, my wife and I hiked up to the top of Bald Mountain near Old Forge, New York in the Adirondack Mountains. This was the view from the summit processed in Macphun Aurora HDR software.

5.) Cinderella Castle at Dusk (21 Favs). During my September visit to Walt Disney World, I had set a goal to photograph a sunset in the Magic Kingdom with Cinderella Castle as my foreground subject. The weather was not too cooperative until after the Sun had set. I’ll take it.

4.) Warming Up at Saratoga (24 Favs). For the second summer in a row, I traveled to the world famous Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York to enjoy and photograph the thoroughbred horse races. Before the stormy weather hit, I got in some motion photography with this panning shot of a horse being warmed up ahead of a race.

3.) Galactic Mountain (32 Favs). Disney’s Hollywood Studios now has nightly fireworks shows. With Disney’s Animal Kingdom not too far away, a fellow Disney photographer told me about this angle to capture fireworks with the thrill ride Expedition EVEREST in the foreground.

Before I get to the last two photos I want to define what flickr Explore is. A photo is selected for Explore by a complex algorithm calculated into something Flickr calls “interestingness.” Each day, photos are posted to the Explore home page. When a photo gets explored, its views and favorites climb very fast. The Favs for the last two photos were taken back on December 27, 2016 after being Explored.

2.) Christmastime on Main Street USA (Favs 110). After the last stage show in front of Cinderella Castle each day in the Magic Kingdom, you can walk up to the castle’s entrance and see a view right down Main Street USA. Being all decorated for Christmas with a big tree, I could not resist taking this photo even if I didn’t have a tripod with me. Turned out thousands of people could not resist viewing the result.

Nikon D750/24-120VR, 1/100s, f/4, ISO 6400, EV -1.0, 120mm Focal Length.

1.) Soarin’ Over the Matterhorn (198 Favs). Disney updated the attraction called Soarin’ in The Land pavilion of Epcot. The first version featured scenes from California in the United States of America. The new one is more fitting for Walt Disney World as it features scenes from all over the world starting with the Swiss Alps. I used a Fisheye lens to allow me to frame the photo using people on the ride with me.

There you have it. My Best of 2016 as selected by the flickr community.
