A stretch of Canopy Road near Tallahassee, Florida.

Canopy roads have large moss-draped live oaks, sweet gums, hickory trees and pines casting protective shade over roads around Tallahassee, Florida, with limbs that meet in a canopy to provide cooling shade for the roads and very scenic drives for travelers. There are nine official canopy roads in the Tallahassee area accounting for 78 miles of highway.
Yet, the road you see here is not one of them. I was told about this road by a fellow flickr photographer who grew up in north western Florida. The road is not very busy as it dead ends at a lake. Safe enough to set up to take a series of bracketed photos for HDR images like the one above and allowing for my wife to drive up and down the road to create good stock photos for my catalog.

I’d never heard of canopy roads before. You’ve got me thinking about a variety of senses that must be in action while driving a road like this: sight, sound and even smell must be unique here.

Don’t forget touch…those oaks were dropping their acorns on top of my head and the moss is so soft. When there were no cars near, the birds were all you could hear. Hard to see them in the canopy.

This light, the mix of sunshine and shadows which you show here, is so inviting to look at, it is a wonderful photo. Interesting to think of that the same place probably would appear completely different at a gray day, perhaps even scary. It is amazing what light can do to a photo.
You are lucky to have a wife who are willing to help you in your hunt for good photographic shots. 🙂
