A boy walks past one of the games on the Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey as Trump's Taj Mahal casino resort towers over them. Nikon D700/28-300VR, 1/60s, f/3.5, ISO 1600, EV +0.3, 28mm focal length.
In the room I stayed at in one of the casinos on the Atlantic City Boardwalk there were old photos of a time when the Boardwalk was full of life. Even though they are black and white, I can see the color in the people’s faces and the buildings. Today, the Boardwalk is dwarfed by the large casino resorts which would rather let the Boardwalk fade away to keep the people inside playing away their money.
The Boardwalk has become a shell of its glory days. Souvenir shops, massage parlors, psychic readings dominate the area with some pizza and other fast food types of places. Large chain restaurants are there hooked to the casinos to draw in even more people into the gaming areas.
As I have mentioned before, Ocean City, New Jersey’s Boardwalk will give you a better and more family friendly experience. Which is too bad, I would have loved to have visited one of those black and white photos.
I enjoyed your photo, but that is as close as I would ever want to get.

I liked the Ocean City, Maryland boardwalk… at least how it was when we were there about 9 years ago. Who knows how it has changed since then.
This is kind of a sad photo, seeing how NOT busy the boardwalk is.

Yes, it is a sad photo as is most of the rest of the Atlantic City Boardwalk.

when where you here Scott? I”m 40 minutes away from Atlantic City and I have fond memorys of Steele pier and the diving horse, spent many a summer in Brigantine. I have a feeling the boardwalk isn’t crowded b/c of kids still being in school……my kids aren’t done until next weekend. The boardwalk is PACKED during the summer.

Oh, sorry, Doreen! I was there from Sunday to Wednesday morning. Spent a lot of time out at a nearby wildlife refuge and then a trip down to Ocean City. Weather was so-so but better than being at work!

I love your selective coloring. That is something I keep meaning to learn how to do. Did you watch “Boardwalk Empire” on HBO this past winter? That was a very interesting look at the “glory days” of the Boardwalk.

This is not a selective colored image. I only did my normal adjustments. I do not get HBO so I haven’t seen the series but sounds interesting.

Wow, that makes the color look even more interesting to me. I guess I just assumed with the gray buildings it was selective.

I used to dance on the Steel Pier in the summers as part of Tony Grant’s Stars of Tomorrow. He was wrong on that count — I’m hardly a star. lol! I went back to AC a few years ago, just to have a look around. It’s changed immensely. As you mentioned, the boardwalk is a shell of its former glory days.
Great capture, Scott.
