For the second year running, I covered the Apple Run events at the LaFayette Apple Festival in LaFayette, New York. The three races consist of a 1 Mile Fun Run for families and a 5K and 15K road races. This year there were 359 participants who gathered on a very frosty morning with temperatures hovering just above the freezing mark. The sky was blue and clear with many runners saying it was a perfect day for a run. As the Sun cleared the valley walls, the temperature slowly warmed up and bathed the race courses in perfect light for my task of photographing the races.

Another photographer was covering the start and in race photos for the 15K while I covered the 5K. The new Nikon 28-300VR FX lens has a vibration reduction (VR) setting for photographing from a moving vehicle. The lens did very well from a moving automobile going about 20 mph (32 kph) even at the maximum focal length of 300mm.

When covering an event like the Apple Run, I try to look for stories going on. In the photo below, the two young girls where waiting for the first women runner to finish the 15K Road Race (you can see her in the background on the right as she came into view). The girls started cheering and jumping to urge her to the finish line.

Sharpness, depth and great colors as always, the two first photos are my favorites as they are close at the motive, and including a stribe of sun as effect. I suppose you were tired after that long run holding a camera. 😉

Scott, I really like the first image, was it still dark? I thought it might be with the high ISO and EV of +0.6.
You’ve captured a nice story in the last photo. 🙂

The road was pretty well shaded but there was a streak of sunlight. The reason for the high ISO was the fact I was using shutter priority set at 1/250th of a second. With the Nikon D700, ISO’s up to 1600 are very clean. Using a fast shutter makes for sharper photos, too.

Kids are magnets to my camera. They speak volumes in their faces and postures many adults would never allow you to see.

Thanks, Mike! Love the 70-200VR f/2.8 lens, especially on the Nikon D700 where you still get great bokeh around f/5. Something that is missing in some of my DX lenses.
