Driving down the road one day I spied this garage with some very interesting work going on in its bays. A roadster hot rod in one and, my favorite, a coupe from the 1940’s. There’s was even an old antique truck out front waiting its turn to be restored.

Scale model of a garage at the Syracuse Nationals car show.
he kept it to scale. 1/30th to be exact. The cars are models while the garage was built of wood, plastic and fiberglass. This model garage was entered into the model diorama competition at the 2011 Syracuse Nationals car show last weekend.
This is my contribution to Assignment 14: Showing Scale.

Btw. I will do my absolute best to photograph something for your challenge. I have something in mind, it’s just finding the time to do it, that’s the problem. If I do get something, my contribution will be a day late, sorry.

Oh I was going to say it was cute too! Must be a girl thing from our Barbie-doll days. Definitely a unique take on showing scale! Did you already have this in mind when you posted the assignment?

Not when I posted the assignment. When I decided I would be going to the show, I remembered they had a model competition which might work and it did. Check out my Flickr post today for another photo I almost used.

Loved this post, Scott! At first I thought you were playing with lens, focus, etc…like with a Lensbaby…then I scrolled down and saw the scale model…pretty cool!

Your limited focal depth enhances the scenes depth. -Scale in distance in a way.

Now you’re talking, Carsten. I visited with the builder for a bit. He wants to add more details but ran out of time before the show. He had already picked up a few items from the vendors at the show.

I was hoping to submit a photo from a model train set we saw at the science museum in Pittsburgh, but nothing came out well (no tripod, low lighting conditions, and two granddaughters always on the move do not make for good indoor photos).

Great post, Scott, this reminds me of my many toy cars and model trains, which I spent countless hours with when I was a boy ( quite a number of years ago;-)). The young people (boys) today probably requires more digital technology of their toys ….
