Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia) singing on a cold and blustery morning at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge near Seneca Falls, New York.
The Refuge has cut back the song sparrow’s habitat along the Wildlife Drive this year. In year’s past I would see a male singing to stake out his territory every few feet. They are spaced out about every 100 feet this year.
This photo makes me smile. One of the best bird shots I’ve seen and a brilliant display of bird personality.

Over the years, I have seen this bird feature so many expressions. Tough to do when you have a beak. 🙂 Thanks, BM!

That’s about as cute as you can get! Excellent shot!

As cute as this looks, he is being very serious. Singing does two things for him: stakes out his territory and lures in a mate. I wish him well in both endeavors.

FANTASTIC shot Scott!
Easily one of my favourites so far 🙂
I’m impressed especially because it shows how tough this little guy is as he braves the blustering wind, but also how delicately he is built and that he is as fragile as he is strong.

My 7 y.o. daughter requests a button you can click to hear the song along with animated notes coming from its beak. 🙂

Deanna,
Your daughter will find his song here: Spring Song. She’ll have to imagine the animated notes. 🙂

He looks like he’s working hard and wondering whether he made the right career choices. Definitely persevering, though. Tough little guy.

Beautiful shot Scott, I enjoy watching them sing but never seen them this close before.

On the Wildlife Drive, they birds are used to cars being close though the 400mm lens is a must to get shots like this.

He sure is singing his little heart out. His fluffed up feathers tell me it was a very cold morning indeed. That is one excellent photo.

Thank you, Amy. It was chilly. Temps in the 30’s F when I took this.
