Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia) singing on a cold and blustery morning at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge near Seneca Falls, New York.
The Refuge has cut back the song sparrow’s habitat along the Wildlife Drive this year. In year’s past I would see a male singing to stake out his territory every few feet. They are spaced out about every 100 feet this year.

As cute as this looks, he is being very serious. Singing does two things for him: stakes out his territory and lures in a mate. I wish him well in both endeavors.

On the Wildlife Drive, they birds are used to cars being close though the 400mm lens is a must to get shots like this.
