did you say playoffs? High school ice hockey entered the New York State Sectional playoffs last week. All the cliches that come to mind became real to those participating. The games mean more. Win and survive. Lose and go home.
My high school never had a varsity hockey team I could have played for when I attended. Watching them last week, I pulled for the players and was envious of them. Photographing their playoff game I saw them in my viewfinder meet the challenge of a team they had lost to eight days before. Though I know the players had no idea what was happening, the actions of the winners and losers became apparent in the images below.

I really like your sports photography, Scott. You have a way of revealing the inner athlete.

Thank you, Gerry. Last year I concentrated on just getting good shots, anticipating goals and peak action moments. This year, I’ve gotten better at getting the shot and now try to go a little beyond those and show the emotions and skill of the players who play for the love of the game and honor of representing their school.

These are great action sports photos. Something I haven’t tried and something Preston wants to try. I really like the fourth photo with the goal defender. Most likely, we’ll be attending some local sports events this year to try this type of photography. We’ve seen some excellent crisp and clear shots by you, Scott. Photography is always in the learning mode. 🙂

Have fun! Hoping you have better light. The faster the shutter speed the better you’ll do. Of course, you can do some panning and such, too. Fun to experiment. The drama and fun of sports is both challenging and very rewarding.

Scott,
I’m liking your sports photos as well. I haven’t tried this type of photography…yet. I think it will be on my list for the future.

Fits right in with travel photography as sports is found everywhere and is a big part of a people’s culture. Hope to see some on your blog later this year.
